SEAL Challenge
2025
Welcome to the Seal Challenge, an exciting multidisciplinary adventure organized PPM Troop-30, Segambut District, Kuala Lumpur. This unique event combines thrilling activities like pioneering, kayaking, knots and lashings, first aid and safety, offering participants the ultimate test of teamwork, endurance, and scouting expertise. Whether you’re mastering new skills or pushing your limits, the Seal Challenge promises an unforgettable experience in the great outdoors!


The Challenges - Rules & Guidelines
Overview:
Each team will receive one tandem kayak and will compete in a relay race of 500M-800M course (per run). Teams must complete the circuit twice, with baton passes required between team
Rules:
- Teams must complete the circuit twice.
- Baton must be passed successfully to the next team member.
- Teams must follow the given route.
Scoring System:
- 1st place: 10 points
- 2nd place: 9 points
- 3rd place: 8 points
- 4th to 6th place: 7 points
- 7th to 8th place: 6 points
- 9th to 10th place: 5 points
Placements will be determined by the time taken to complete the race, ranked fastest to slowest.
Overview:
Each team must navigate on land and water using a map and compass. Waypoints are marked with an orienteering marker that includes a 4-digit pin, which teams must record and submit on an orienteering card.
Rules:
Teams must complete the route within the given time.
Teams must record each waypoint’s pin and submit the orienteering card at the endpoint.
Teams that fail to submit their card on time will receive a DNF.
Scoring System:
15 waypoints: 10 points
14-13 waypoints: 9 points
12-11 waypoints: 8 points
10-9 waypoints: 7 points
8-7 waypoints: 6 points
5-6 waypoints: 5 points
4-3 waypoints: 4 points
2-1 waypoints: 3 points
DNF: 0 points
Teams will be ranked based on the number of waypoints collected, with a higher number receiving better scores.
Overview:
Teams are required to build a structure (e.g., a bridge, tower, or platform) using ropes and wooden spars, ensuring stability and functionality.
Rules:
Teams must complete their structure within the given time.
The structure must meet specific criteria for stability, functionality, and height.
Teams must work collaboratively and demonstrate proper lashing techniques.
Scoring System:
Excellent (meets all criteria): 10 points
Very Good (meets most criteria): 8-9 points
Good (meets some criteria): 6-7 points
Fair (structure incomplete or unstable): 4-5 points
Poor (does not meet criteria): 0-3 points
Teams will be ranked based on stability, functionality, and overall execution of their structure.
Example Structures
Structure: Hourglass tower
Height:
5 meters from the ground. Proportion of the based must be at least 2/3 off the entire length off the spars used
Material:
Bamboo or mangrove wood.
Lashings:
Common square lashing or Japanese square lashing, clove hitch, timber hitch, and diagonal lashing

Structure: Beacon tower
Height:
5 meters from the ground. Proportion of the based must be at least 2/3 off the entire length off the spars used.
Material: Bamboo or mangrove wood.
Lashings: Common square lashing or Japanese square lashing, clove hitch, timber hitch, and diagonal lashing

Structure: Double A-Frame trebuchet
Height:
Minimum Arm: 2.5 meters
Material: Bamboo or mangrove wood.
Lashings: Correct application of lashings required

Overview:
Teams must demonstrate the proper rescue techniques for capsized kayakers or individuals in the water using a safety boat.
Rules:
Teams must follow the correct safety procedures.
Teams will be evaluated on technique, efficiency, and adherence to safety protocols.
Scoring System:
Excellent (all steps performed correctly): 10 points
Very Good (minor errors): 8-9 points
Good (some errors, but safe): 6-7 points
Fair (several errors): 4-5 points
Poor (unsafe or incomplete): 0-3 points
Placements will be based on adherence to safety protocols and effectiveness of rescue techniques.
Overview:
Teams will perform basic life support techniques, including CPR, as demonstrated in a simulated rescue scenario.
Rules:
Teams must follow the correct procedure for CPR.
Proper compression depth, rhythm, and rescue breaths must be demonstrated.
Teams must work collaboratively during the simulation.
Scoring System:
Excellent (perfect technique): 10 points
Very Good (minor technique issues): 8-9 points
Good (adequate performance): 6-7 points
Fair (incomplete but effort shown): 4-5 points
Poor (unsafe or incorrect technique): 0-3 points
Placements will be based on accuracy and proper execution of CPR techniques.
Overview:
Teams must demonstrate their ability to tie various knots within a given time frame.
Rules:
Teams will be given a list of specific knots to tie.
Teams must demonstrate correct techniques for each knot.
Time is limited, and incomplete knots will not be counted.
Scoring System:
10 knots: 10 points
9 knots: 9 points
8 knots: 8 points
7 knots: 7 points
6 knots: 6 points
5 knots: 5 points
4 knots: 4 points
3 knots or fewer: 0-3 points
Placements will be based on the number of correct knots completed within the time frame.
Ropes & labels will be provided by the organiser.

Eric Khoo Challenge Trophy
The winners of the 2025 SEAL Challenge will be presented a cash prize and the commemmorative Eric Khoo Challenge Trophy.

Division A: 13-15 years old
Division B: 16-19 years old
Divisions C: 19-25 years old
Division D: Open (26+)
Team Structure:
Each team may consist of 4-6 people in any given division. At least 4 team members are required to compete in each challenge.
